Do antiacids cause constipation and stomach pains?I have come to the realization that my left side stomach pains, and constipation might be from taking too much tums close to everyday! I have GERD... I have quit caffeine and soda, and slowly eliminating tomato based foods and grease... I have also quit alcohol! Which was another big thing for me! For a week now I have been getting stomach pain on my left side, I am not sure if its gas pains, muscle spasms or what... but sometimes I wake up in the morning and on my left side close to the center of my stomach I feel like something is pushing forward, I have been to the ER twice for the problem they took blood and urine test and examined me and said that I was fine, could be muscle spasms... I used to go to the bathroom regularly for 2 to 3 weeks I have been constipated I am started to think that tums may be the reason I have the upset stomach and why I am blocked cuz I chew them like crazy! I am going to stop taking them completely and just eat healthier throughout the week so I dont have to worry about the acid! Ughhh this truely sucks! But anything to be healthy, ever since I was diagnosed with GERD beginning of the summer I have had anxiety attacks galore, they arent as bad as when they first started cuz I am able to control them by keeping my mind off it... but I am sooooo sick of feeling to dettached from the world lately HELP :)

I took TUMS for heartburn until I was diagnosed with an ulcer. An antibiotic with an acid reducer solved my ulcer. I also have GERT, and I take Prilosec, 20-mg, once a day. I too think TUMS added to my constipation then. TUMS are really for a quick-fix for heartburn. There are about 4 or 5 OTC acid fighter that were one time only available with a doctor's prescription. I keep spares OTC Prlosec, 10-mg, should I fail to renew my prescription. Prevacid, Zantac, Pepcid, Prilosec are available OTC, and can provide better control of your stomach acid than TUMBS.
