what is a fluid that would be useful for small glands in the esophagus to secrete?Food only remains in the esophagus for a few seconds. There are small glands in the wall of the esophagus, with ducts leading from the glands to the lumen of the esophagus. Suggest a fluid that it would be useful for the small glands to secrete, and its function.

-P. S. D
Small mucous glands are scattered in the esophageal submucosa. Ducts cross the mucosa and branch into tubular secretory units which are lined by mucus-secreting cells. These glands provide mucus for lubricating the passage of food down the esophagus, augmenting the role of salivary glands.
