What can I do to not get sick when I take iron?

These are useful and collceted by GERD!

What can I do to not get sick when I take iron?I am 28 weeks pregnant and my Dr. office called and told me I am anemic and that I am to take a prescription iron pill. I always get severe stomach cramps and vomiting when I take any kind of vitamin containing iron. The vomiting and stomach cramps when I take iron was happening before I was pregnant and even as a child so I know its not just pregnancy related. As a result of this my Dr. told me not to take prenatal vitamins and I have been doing fine up until now. The pill doesn't even stay down long enough to have a chance to have to even start to really do any good. Sorry if TMI. I also have been slightly anemic my entire life because of my other health conditions witch limit the amount of a lot of foods I can eat. I have IBS-D and my GI Dr. has told me I am to not eat anything that causes "gas" in the intestines. So that eliminates Broccoli (I love broccoli) and any green leafy vegetable. I also have to severely limit how much red meat I eat as it causes me pain to digest. I also have Fibromyalgia and Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) and GERD. The fibromyalgia aggravates everything else causing the symptoms I feel to be more pronounced. (thought I would give a little more background on my situation if it helps at all).I was just wondering if anyone else has this issue and what if anything I can do to take the iron pill with out the "side effects"

don't ask yahoo answers, ask your doctor?

Take a Vitamin B Complex with it. Also take it at night. You can also talk to your Doctor about possibly getting a different iron pill. Some of them are formulated to help with that. I always had problems with prenatal pills and had to try different ones to see which ones worked best for me. They can also give you iron shoots if you can't keep the pills down. But those might make you sick too.

I'm also anemic and have fibromyalgia. Luckily, however, I haven't had the problems you are describing in taking my iron, but there were suggestions made in case I did.

Have you tried taking the pill with food? Don't take it with dairy (it renders the iron useless), but other foods can help buffer it. The iron will be less effective with food, but its not effective at all if you can't keep it down! Taking it with vitamin C might help help you absorb it better, offseting the drawback of taking it with food.

I take fiber supplements as well, although that's for lower GI issues that iron can cause, not vomiting. It might help with the cramps though.

Talk to your doctor about different types of iron. I'm not sure of the differences but I know they are out there. There's regular iron supplements, for example, but then there's ferrous sulfate, which is what I'm currently taking. My body wasn't responding to regular iron. There's at least one other form as well. DON'T try different irons without talking to your doctor, though.
