HELP! 8 week old with GERD...?My son was diagnosed w/ severe GERD at 4 weeks. At the time, I was exclusively breastfeeding. He was extremely gassy, very fussy, grunting all the time, pulling up his legs, spitting up a lot, arching his neck, etc. We took him for an upper GI and the reflux was confirmed. I was told to stop bf and thicken his feeds, which made his poop disgusting but didn't really help anything else. He is on Prevacid, which is helping with the burning but he is still really uncomfortable (grunting & fussing all the time). We have switched him to Nutramigen to see if this helps. It's been 3 days and we're not seeing a difference. I'm pumping & storing my milk for now until we see how the Nutramigen does. We keep him elevated at all times and I even bought a Tucker wedge.
Does anyone have a success story about a GERD baby? Keep in mind that my son's case is considered severe. Did anyone breastfeed through this? He seems much worse when I try to bf. I'm eliminating dairy while we're trying the Nutramigen. This is really taking a toll on the whole family!

My son had GERD. I switched to Enfamil AR and it really helped. My son was on Zantac too. Enfamil AR is thicker than regular formula, so you may have to switch to a larger nipple so the formula can get through. I would give the Nutramigen a few more days. If there is no change, try the Enfamil AR. Talk to the doctor again about the grunting and fussing. He could have a allergy of some sort as well as the GERD. Make an appointment and talk to the doctor about your concerns.

Nutramigen is not really good for GERD. It is thin. Enfamil AR is great, it has added rice (hence the AR). If he is still fussy, he needs thicker formula and to sit up for awhile after eating. I forget the name of the med mine was on but it was not prevacid or zantac. I used Enfamil w/ iron and lipil and added my own rice...1 teaspoon per oz. and he did great. He came off the meds at 9 months and I took the rice out at 10 months. Now, at 11 months he does great and eats all kinds of things including regualr whole milk with no issues.
best of luck.
