Candida (fungal) laryngitis and esophagitis seen by transnasal esophagoscopy (J. Koufman)
This patient is a singer who presented with chronic cough and reflux for 30 years. He has developed candida laryngitis and esophagitis as a result of his long-standing acid reflux (which killed off his normal bacterial flora). Transnasal esophagoscopy (TNE) is a terrific technology that allows examination (endoscopy) of the throat, esophagus, and stomach in people who are awake, comfortable and unsedated. TNE is the best way to screen the esophagus for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer, the fastest growing cancer in America.
