It takes years...however, it is controllable with medication.
See your doctor....you'll probably be prescribed nexium or something similar...or you can just buy prilosec otc (generic: omeprazole).

Hi Skad. The first answer is correct when he says it takes years for chronic GERD to promote cancer. Also, most people with GERD will never develop esophageal cancer.
I disagree with the first answer about the use of acid-inhibiting drugs for two reasons:
1) these drugs do not fix (cure) the cause of your acid reflux, and
2) these drugs have potentially very serious long-term side-effects.
Clearly, you are having a problem that you suspect is reflux. You need to see a health care professional. Hopefully, you will find one to work with you to find and fix the CAUSE of your symptoms and not go the easy route of simply prescribing a drug to mask the symptoms.
You may also want to educate yourself on this issue. Sherry Rogers, M.D. has written an excellent book on the subject called: "No More Heartburn". It is available at Amazon.com. I highly recommend this book for you and your doctor!
Best wishes and good luck.

It takes a long time to develop cancer - but by becoming acidic, you can speed up the process.
By becoming more alkaline, you can prevent cancer and probably not have acid reflux as well.
If you are drinking soft drinks, they are very low PH, thus are acidic, and not great for your health. Stop drinking soft drinks and see if your health improves.
Try taking an antacid 2 hours after a meal, and see if that helps as well.
