I've been diagnosed with GERD. I'm miserable..help?

Hi,I did the following:

I've been diagnosed with GERD. I'm miserable..help?Within the last 5 weeks or so, I began getting an upset stomach and feeling queasy alot. I went to the dr and she diagnosed me with an ulcer and put me on Prilosec 40mg and I took it for 2 wks and I actually felt worse on it. I was experiencing some abdominal pain and really bad nausea. They switched me to Protonix and I took that for a week but was still feeling sick to my stomach alot. I ended up having a scope done and they found out I have a minor hiatal hernia which is causing me to have GERD. Well I'm not on meds right now. I stopped taking them about a wk ago and I go see the gastro dr again tomorrow for a follow up. Within the last 2 wks I've begun having heart burn which has never ever been a problem for me in the past. I get an ache in my chest and throat, I get some stomach pain, but the worst symptom is frequent nausea. They prescribed me anti nausea meds but they don't help much. The weird thing is why did this just start happening recently when I was perfectly fine just 2-3 months ago and now, I'm so sick to my stomach off and on that I'm losing weight and can hardly ever eat? I'm afraid to eat because I never know when my stomach is gonna get upset. All I've been eating is rice, toast, bananas, apple sauce, saltine crackers, water, and a few times I've had plain pancakes and oatmeal. I'm not eating too fast, I'm not eating large amounts at once and I'm not eating anything acidic or greasy so why am I feeling sick nauseated? And I'm not pregnant. They tested me and I'm not. When I had the scope done, the dr said my hiatal hernia is minor and is unlikely causing my problems and he also said I've probably had it for awhile, so why just within the last 5-6 weeks have I become so sick like this?

Wow, you sound like me. I get a final diagnoses on Thursday. My Dr has me on Onomeprazole. twice a day, the first 1/2 hour before I eat in the morning and Sucralfate before bed and two hours after I take my evening meds. the second one is to stop acid attacks at night. This is working good at controlling acid 24/7 most of the time, but there seems to be something else going on.

Helpful answer below. GERD — Comprehensive overview covers symptoms, treatment, diet issues of this acid reflux disease.
