When is the best time to give a reflux (GERD) baby her medicine? My daughter is 4 weeks old and is breastfed. (She even refuses breastmilk in the bottle.) We received her reflux meds yesterday- Zantac (ranitidine)- to be taken twice a day. I wanted to start last night so she would be able to keep *some* food down. But when I gave it to her, she gagged on it, and then immediately threw up...... (not spat up- she vommitted.....a lot.)
Is there a certain time that I'm supposed to give her the Zantac?... like before or after she eats? (It says it can be taken with or without food.) And would it be better to slowly "inject" it into her inner cheek, or squirt it down her throat in one push? I'm guessing she threw up because it tasted so bad and the fact that's all she's been doing anyways. Would the medicine, for any reason, cause her to gag and vommit besides the taste??
She's on a "feed on demand" schedule, so it's hard to put her on a strict schedule- especially when she has been throwing up and I'll never know exactly how much she has eaten, because it can't be measured- just have to observe whether she's satisfied or not.
Doc was the one who prescribed the meds, so he's okay with it. She's already had an episode where she stopped breathing because she was gagging on the stomach acid. She has since either slept in her swing or carseat. This girl (unlike my son) absolutely REFUSES bottles, so I'm going to try the medicine dropper mixed with breastmilk. Hope it works.

My daughther was put on zantac when she was 4 months old. I noticed that it was best Before being fed, at night. because if she spit up, must of it would be milk and the med would stay in. and at night cause she was sleeping and relaxed and less chance for spit ups and her tummy would feel better with the med at night and let her sleep. Hope everything goes well with your baby.

My daughter had this. The most important is to put the baby on a strick feeding schledule and you should be giving it 15 minutes or more prior to feeding. You doctor should have given you a time.
Make sure you keep bibs, bibs, bibs, cloths cloths and extra clothes not matter where you are. Also keep a little bottle of baby bath to keep the baby fresh when she spits up.
The meds should be given in medicine syringe and slowly pushed in one time down the side of her cheek. No child likes meds. Ask the pharmacist to add flavor, they can do that to some meds for children to get them to take thier meds better
i would for sure give it 15 minutes at least before feeding
Never lay her down after feeding. Put her in a swing or car seat so she is propped up at least for a hour after eating.
After a while i was giving her the meds every other feeding and then weened her down to just the PM, but i i feed her earlier at night .
Add cereal when she is about 2 months old and when she is passing firm stools, Only use a teaspoon per 4 oz bottle and then increase as she gets older. The heavier the food the better is stays down.
Feel free the email me with any othe suggestion. My daughters eventually grew out of it by the time they were 6-8 months old

did u chk with ur doc before giving it?? i mean 6 weeks shud be fine. 'coz by that time babies can take some changes in the taste. u cud try to mix it in milk if ur doc says its ok to do so. in a medicine dropper u cud mix ur breastmilk largely enough to mask away the awful taste of the medicine. hope it works!!
ofcourse the taste of medicine wud've led to vomitting. my girl used to vomit the moment she used to have something other than breastmilk!!!
