GERD(Gastroesophageal reflux disease) is basically acid reflux or heart burn. What the doctor is telling you is the stomach acid is splashing up onto your upper stomach and esophagus(the tube that leads from your mouth to your stomach). That can be one cause of weird chest pains or twitches. Chest pains or twitches do not cause the acid reflux. It is the other way around. The twitches are cause by the GERD. You can reduce GERD mostly by diet.

I just went through this with a strange pain right over my heart. I had the ekg, and stress test and all came up clean. The doctor suspected either GERD or hiatal hernia or both. I took a break from the gym, cleaned up my diet, ate less greasy food and completely cut out sodas and coffee for several weeks afterward and the pains went away. The acid in sodas can cause a lot of that stuff and it seemed like the caffeine in the coffee would make the symptoms worse. Stress can also cause it to act up, so do things that help you stay relaxed.

Good Luck.
