Prilosec OTC long term?

Hi,I did the following:

Prilosec OTC long term?I have been taking Prilosec OTC (Proton Pump Inhibitors) for a year and 4 months to treat symptoms of acid reflux. I ingest one (1) 20mg dose daily to treat symptoms including sore throat and burning sensation in throat. By taking one dose for the last year and a half, did I do any damage to my stomach or esophagus region? Or does it take a much longer period of time or a higher dosage to induce damage? Is this a safe drug? I took two 20mg doses for a period of one week as well. In addition, is additional GERD medicine including pepcid relatively safe? Thank you for your time.

Hello, yes Prilosec are very safe medications, however I do not know why you are taking one daily, unless doctor prescibed this you should not do this.

When you stop taking the medicine however you may experience bad reflux as a withdrawal effect.

Usually acid reflux is self-limiting unless you have ulcer problems which is a different issue.

As regards to the pepcid they have the same function as the Prilosec, but PPIs are a better option and show less side-effects.
